Fascias, soffits and guttering don't get noticed much, but they're doing a lot of work. Between them, they carry the weight of your gutters, keep water and pests out of the roof space, and protect the timber ends of the roof from the weather. When they fail, the damage doesn't stay small for long.
The fascia is the board that runs along the edge of your roof, and it does more than you'd think: it supports the bottom row of tiles and gives your guttering somewhere solid to fix to. If it starts to rot or pull away, the guttering can go with it. The soffit sits underneath, sealing off the gap between the wall and the roofline so rain, birds and insects can't get in, while still allowing the loft to breathe.
Peeling paint, sagging gutters, water running down the wall instead of into the downpipe, or gaps where birds have got into the eaves are all signs your roofline needs a look. Left alone, these small issues tend to turn into damp and timber damage, which cost a lot more to put right.
